Rockhampton confirmed to host school rowing championships

Rockhampton has been confirmed to host one of the state’s most significant rowing events in September 2026, with the Queensland Schools’ Rowing Championships to be held on September 19 – 21.

Rockhampton Regional Council has committed $10,000 to the event, plus in-kind investment, which draws 800 athletes plus supporters to the region, delivering a strong boost to the local economy and tourism sector.

“I’m really proud to announce that Rockhampton will host the Queensland Schools’ Championships in 2026,” said Mayor, Tony Williams.

“We know these types of sporting events are a great boost to the region but this also proves our ability to host and deliver large-scale regattas right here in Rockhampton.

“People have been rowing on the Fitzroy River for more than 100 years and the river continues to provide the consistent, high-quality conditions needed for major competition.”

Rowing Queensland CEO, Anthea O’Loughlin said the organisation welcomed the commitment from Rockhampton Regional Council to re-establish a rowing course and support the continuation of the event following the loss of the rowing course in 2024 due to flooding.

“Students from across Queensland will descend on Rockhampton for the Championship, with the Interregional Challenge being one of the key events,” said Ms O’Loughlin.

“This allows students to form teams outside of their school, for highly contested racing and strengthening pathways, participation and connection across the state.”
