Liverpool Council mourns passing of former Mayor

Liverpool City Council is mourning the loss of former Mayor, Gary Lucas (pictured).

Mr Lucas served two terms as a Councillor (1991-1997 and 2008-2012) and held the position of Mayor in 1988-89. He was known for his dedication to the community and his contributions to local governance, the Council said in a statement

Beyond his mayoral duties, Mr Lucas was deeply committed to preserving Liverpool’s rich history and celebrating its heritage.

In 2015, he uncovered the stories of World War I soldiers buried in the Liverpool New Cemetery, leading to the installation of proper headstones, including that of Eric George Batson, some 99 years after his death, Mayor Ned Mannoun recalled.

“Mr Lucas’s passion for local history extended to his research on the town’s military past, shedding light on the sacrifices of local soldiers,” he said.

“His efforts ensured that their stories were not forgotten, and he played a pivotal role in making sure their service to the nation was properly commemorated.”

He was also deeply involved in the broader Liverpool community, as a foundation member of both the Chipping Norton Sports Club and the Liverpool Action Group, as well as taking leadership roles with the Liverpool Sub-Branch of the RSL, the Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre board, various cricket and soccer teams and is credited with initiating the formation of graffiti removal teams in the city.

Mayor Mannoun said Mr Lucas’ dedication to Liverpool’s heritage and his leadership as Mayor had left an indelible mark on the community.

“Liverpool City Council extends its condolences to his family and he will be fondly remembered for his unwavering commitment to public service and historical preservation,” he said.
