Young people who are community-minded and want to make a difference in Greater Geelong are invited to put their hands up to be a part of the city’s 2027 Youth Council.
City of Greater Geelong Council is looking for 11 passionate residents aged between 12 and 17 years old to act as an official advisory committee to Council next year.
It says the Youth Council members will be the official ‘youth voice’ for Greater Geelong, setting priorities and providing advice on matters that impact young people and the wider community.
“We want a diverse Youth Council that is representative of the entire community,” said Mayor, Stretch Kontelj OAM
“The Youth Council helps Council understand the perspective of young people in the region, what issues are impacting them and how we can improve the experience of growing up in Greater Geelong.
“Not only will members be learning about local government, but they will also influence Council decisions through their advice.
“If you are driven and interested in representing your peers, please put yourself forward and nominate, regardless of previous leadership experience.
“We also invite parents, carers and teachers to encourage the passionate young people in their lives to apply for the Youth Council and make a difference,” he said.
2026 Junior Mayor Vignesh “Viggy” Ram said being part of the Youth Council had been an incredibly rewarding opportunity.
“Young people have heaps of valuable ideas, and Youth Council gives them a genuine seat at the table to share those ideas,” he said.
“If you are passionate about something and want to create change, I’d strongly encourage you to nominate.
“You don’t have to have been a captain before! You just have to bring your ideas and yourself!”
Meeting monthly, the committee will elect a Junior Mayor and Junior Deputy Mayor, learn leadership skills, receive mentoring from Councillors and the City’s Youth Development staff, participate in events and provide formal reports to Council.
Nominations are open until Sunday 27 September.
