Kiama by-election a close race to ballot count finish line

Kiama Municipal Council says the results of a by-election will not be officially declared until Tuesday, 8 September as the result of an extremely close race between the two candidates.

There are 18,055 electors in the Kiama local government area, with the official ballot paper count from the NSW Electoral Commission currently sitting at 14,061.

Candidate, Stan Jarrett currently holds a slim lead over fellow independent candidate, Michael Bowden.

At the time of publishing, Mr Jarrett had received 6,813 votes to Mr Bowden’s 6,616 votes – a split of 50.73% to 49.27%.

Postal votes will be received by the NSW Electoral Commission until 6pm on Friday, 4 September before the final count is completed the following Monday.

The by-election winner will be sworn in at Kiama Council’s next Ordinary Meeting on 15 September.

The official vote count is updated at the NSW Electoral Commission website.
