Two Kiama Municipal Council lifeguards have been recognised for their dedicated service.
Supervising Lifeguard, Craig Bowley and Senior Lifeguard, Jake Willick, were awarded the Commander’s Certificate of Appreciation by the Commander of the Lake Illawarra Police District, Superintendent Darren Brand at a ceremony at Lake Illawarra Police Station.
They were honoured for their work together responding to a surf rescue with Jake also recognised for another incident in which he displayed outstanding bravery.
Kiama Downs Surf Life Saving Club’s Josh Douglas received the Region Commander’s Certificate of Merit for his efforts in responding to an incident off Bombo Beach.
Mayor, Cameron McDonald said Kiama’s lifeguards do an impressive job in their efforts to keep beachgoers safe against dangerous surf conditions, rip currents and unexpected hazards.
“They perform rescues, provide first aid, often preventing life‑threatening situations from becoming tragedies,” he said.
“They offer guidance, education and help beachgoers to understand beach rules and conditions.
“On behalf of everyone at Council, we congratulate Craig, Jake and our entire lifeguard crew for their dedication and passion in keeping our beaches safe for everyone.”
