Victoria’s Hume City Council is changing the way it charges for waste.
At a Council meeting on Monday, Council endorsed an itemised Waste Charge to be introduced in the 2023/24 financial year.
Currently, waste charges are included as part of the general rates. This change will see the cost of waste and recycling services removed from general rates and become a separate Waste Service Charge from July 2023.
Council says ratepayers will notice the change when they receive their annual rates notice in August 2023.
The amount of the separate Waste Service Charge will be decided with the 2023/24 Council Budget.
“We will have more information for ratepayers about the cost and method of the Waste Service Charge in 2023,” the Council said in a statement.
“Separating waste charges from the general rates will bring us in line with more than 90% of Councils across Victoria. 76 of the 79 Victorian Councils have a separate waste charge.
“It’s also a way for us to be more transparent and give residents a clearer picture of how much it costs to manage waste in Hume City.”
