Muswellbrook Shire Council has accepted the resignation of General Manager, Derek Finnigan, following more than four decades with the organisation.
The Council said Mr Finnigan’s (pictured) public service career was one of remarkable dedication and progression.
He began as a plant operator in Council’s Works Depot and went on to serve in a wide range of operational, infrastructure and senior leadership roles.
He was appointed Director of Community Infrastructure in 2018, Deputy General Manager in July 2020 and General Manager in March 2023.
“Throughout his career, Derek has made a significant contribution to the delivery and management of infrastructure and services across the Shire, bringing decades of practical experience and an exceptional understanding of Council, its operational and the community it serves,” the Council said in a statement.
“His contribution extends well beyond the positions he has held. Derek is known throughout Council and the community for his kindness, humility, hard work and genuine dedication to the people of Muswellbrook Shire.
“Few people have given as much of their working life to this organisation and community. Council extends its sincere gratitude and appreciation to Derek for his extraordinary 44 years of service and the lasting contribution he has made to Muswellbrook Shire and wishes him all the very best for the future.
“On behalf of the Muswellbrook Community, Councillors and Council staff we would like to express our deepest gratitude to Derek for his exceptional service and lasting contribution to Muswellbrook Shire.”
Council has appointed current Director of Economic Investment, Shaelee Richards, as acting General Manager until the recruitment of a permanent General Manager.
Ms Richards brings more than 25 years of experience across local government and executive leadership experience at Muswellbrook Shire Council, Maitland City Council and the City of Gold Coast. Since 2022 she has led Council’s economic development, governance and community portfolio and played a significant role in shaping Council’s strategic direction and advocating for the future of the Shire.
