Kiama advocacy plan released for consultation

Local residents are being encouraged to have their say on Kiama Municipal Council’s draft advocacy plan, which outlines an updated list of key priorities for the local government area.

Advocating for Kiama, 2026-28 has been published on the Council’s website, with the community able to submit feedback on the document until 23 November.

The Council said the strategic document is designed to equip Kiama for the challenges and opportunities that come with an ever-changing and evolving region.

Mayor, Cameron McDonald said it is critical that Council formally advocates for these issues and projects so that other levels of government are aware of what is needed to set the community up for a more prosperous future.

The four linked pillars of the document are Housing, Infrastructure, Liveability and Connections.

“This plan brings together a broader program of projects and strategies that we have already been working towards as well as new items which are essential for efficient long-term growth,” said Mayor McDonald.

“Our priorities range from unlocking Council-owned land at Spring Creek and planning the infrastructure needed for future growth, to reinvigorating Blowhole Point, investing in sporting facilities, finding an optimal solution for Jamberoo Mountain Road, completing the Kiama Coast Walk, and improving community safety via a new CCTV network and connections between our town centres.

“While these priorities form the foundation of Council’s advocacy agenda, we continue to actively advocate on a range of other requests, including those related to community safety, water infrastructure, local government financial sustainability and legislative reform.

“Our approach is straightforward. Where Council can act, we will. Where a decision sits with another level of government, we will make the case clearly while providing the evidence and working constructively for the best outcome for the Kiama community.”

In the lead-up to the state election in March, Mayor McDonald and executive staff will be meeting with candidates to go through Council’s Advocacy Plan to discuss ways of partnering with the NSW Government on delivering projects and infrastructure.

Once approved by Council, Advocating for Kiama 2026-28 will replace the previous advocacy plan which was launched prior to last year’s state by-election for the seat of Kiama.

To submit feedback, visit https://yoursay.kiama.nsw.gov.au/advocacy-plan by 23 November or attend Council’s community pop-up session at Kiama Farmers’ Market on Wednesday 4 November from 3-6pm.
