“Victorian Mayors play a vital role in shaping strong, resilient communities. Don Watson’s oration will offer an important moment for both new and outgoing Mayors to consider their legacy, the challenges ahead, and the critical role of local government in providing the services and infrastructure our communities need.”

A former speechwriter and advisor to Prime Minister, Paul Keating, Mr Watson is widely respected for his ability to illuminate the forces shaping Australian political life. His have earned national awards and critical acclaim.

The Oration forms part of the MAV’s Mayors Institute, a cornerstone leadership development program supporting Victorian Mayors and Deputy Mayors to build capability, strengthen governance, and foster sector-wide collaboration.

President Anderson said the Oration has become an important moment of connection for leaders across the state.

“This is an opportunity for the sector to come together, reflect on the year that has passed, and look ahead to the challenges and opportunities for 2026,” she said.
