City of Clarence disc golf course earns national ranking

City of Clarence Council’s Seven Mile Beach Disc Golf Course has earned national recognition after being ranked among Australia’s top 10 most-played disc golf courses.

As the first public disc golf course on the Eastern Shore and located just minutes from Hobart International Airport, the Council says the free nine-hole course has quickly established itself as a destination for players across Tasmania and beyond.

Set among the iconic pine forests of Seven Mile Beach, the course that was designed by Ollie Mundy-Castle and Drew Halpin, recorded more than 2,500 played rounds in 2025 alone.

The new ranking comes courtesy of global disc golf platform UDisc, the world’s largest disc golf scoring app and course directory that tracks player participation and course usage around the world.

Mayor, Brendan Blomeley said the recognition was a huge achievement for Clarence and the wider Tasmanian disc golf community.

“To have Seven Mile Beach Disc Golf recognised as a number one course in Tasmania and among the top 10 in Australia is an incredible result,” Mayor Blomeley said.

“This course has quickly become a real community success story – it’s free, accessible, family-friendly and set in an unique environment.

“The popularity of the course shows there’s strong demand for recreation experiences that get people outdoors, active and connected with nature, and is testament to the quality outcome City of Clarence strives to deliver for our community.”

Disc Golf Tasmania spokeperson, Sean Gottschling said the ranking reflected the quality of the facility and the unique experience offered to players.

“It’s pretty spectacular for a relatively new course to be listed on the top 10 most played courses in the country. We’re really proud,” Mr Gottschling said.

“Having a course set within a pine forest is quite unique. It was also designed to be beginner-friendly, giving new players an easy introduction to the sport while still offering enough technical challenges to keep experienced players coming back

“Huge thanks to the City of Clarence team for their work in making the disc golf trial a success. Disc golf is a unique sport that doesn’t have the easily measured participation numbers of more traditional sports, so there was an element of backing the concept first and allowing the community demand to grow from there.”

Disc golf, a sport that has been rapidly gaining popularity, involves players throwing a disc (frisbee) from a tee to a basket. Just like golf, the goal is to complete each hole with the fewest number of throws possible.
