Applications open for Blue Mountains youth council

Blue Mountains City Council is inviting local young people to apply for the 2027 Blue Mountains Youth Council, offering a unique opportunity to represent their peers, influence local decision-making and create positive change in the community.

Mayor, Mark Greenhill OAM, encouraged young people from across the city to put themselves forward.

“The Youth Council gives young people a genuine opportunity to have their voices heard and to help shape the future of our community,” Mayor Greenhill said.

“Young people bring fresh ideas, innovative thinking and a strong commitment to the issues that matter most to them. Through Youth Council, they can turn that passion into action and make a real difference in the Blue Mountains.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of the program is that Youth Council members decide the focus of their work each year. That means local young people have the opportunity to identify the issues they care about most and work together to create meaningful change.

“If you are aged between 12 and 18 and want to contribute to your community, develop new skills and connect with like-minded young people, I encourage you to apply.”

The Blue Mountains Youth Council is a leadership and advocacy program comprising up to 20 members who meet regularly to discuss local issues, participate in consultations, contribute to Council projects and develop initiatives that benefit young people and the wider community.

Youth Council members gain valuable experience in leadership, teamwork, community engagement and advocacy, while developing a greater understanding of local government and decision-making processes.

This year’s Youth Council has been involved in several festivals and community events including leading a speaker panel at Blue Mountains International Day of Peace, emceeing and interviewing young artists as part of the ECHO youth music showcase and interviewing the Mayor and local members as part of a podcasting project.

They’ve also worked with local creatives to develop new skills in videography and public speaking and met with council services to provide youth feedback for council projects, the Council said.

No previous experience is required. Applications are open to young people aged 12 to 18 who live, work or study in the Blue Mountains and are passionate about making a positive contribution to their community.

Applications for the 2027 Youth Council are now open and close Friday 18 December 2026.
