Young people take centre stage at Wingecarribee Youth Forum

Young people from high schools across Wingecarribee Shire came together at the annual Wingecarribee Youth Forum this week to help shape the future of their community.

Hosted by Wingecarribee Shire Council, the Forum provided a platform for young people to discuss local issues, develop solutions and connect directly with decision-makers.

Mayor, Erin Foley said the Forum showcased the important role young people play in shaping the Southern Highlands.

“From affordable housing and wellbeing to protecting the environment and strengthening community connections, discussions at the Forum showed just how deeply young people care about the future of the Southern Highlands,” Mayor Foley said.

“Students demonstrated leadership, initiative and a genuine commitment to their community, bringing forward practical ideas and working together to develop solutions.”

“Young people experience our community in unique ways, and their insights help shape better decisions for everyone.”

Students heard from keynote speaker, tv presenter, Julia Zemiro, took part in leadership and skills-building activities, and explored the opportunities and challenges facing local young people.

The Forum also featured a question and answer session with NSW Minister for Youth, Rose Jackson; Member for Whitlam, Carol Berry and Mayor Foley, giving participants the opportunity to engage directly with government representatives and gain a greater understanding of how different levels of government can work together to create positive change.

Throughout the day, students worked collaboratively to develop ideas aimed at strengthening their communities before presenting their concepts to a Pitch Panel of local leaders and decision-makers, including Wendy Tuckerman MP, Judy Hannan MP and Councillor Heather Champion.

The annual Youth Forum is a key action of the Young Highlands 2025-2029 Plan and reflects Council’s commitment to supporting young people to actively participate in civic life and community decision-making.

The Council says the ideas and priorities identified through the Forum will help guide future conversations and initiatives across the community.
