Manningham joins WHO global age-friendly network

The World Health Organization has approved Manningham Council’s application to join its Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities.

The network connects cities and communities around the world that are committed to supporting healthy ageing. Membership is awarded to communities that demonstrate a clear commitment to becoming more age-friendly through strategic planning, leadership, community engagement and continuous improvement.

Manningham is home to a growing and diverse population of older residents. According to the Manningham State of the City Report, 28% of Manningham residents are aged 60 and over, compared with 22% of Victorians.

Mayor, Jim Grivas said joining the global network was a significant achievement.

“This is recognition of our ongoing commitment to supporting older residents and creating a more inclusive community for people of all ages,” Mayor Grivas said.

“Membership of this global network isn’t automatic. Communities must demonstrate a genuine commitment to age-friendly planning and to involving older residents in shaping their future.

“We’re proud that Manningham has been recognised on the world stage.

“We now have the opportunity to network and share experiences and learnings with other cities and communities, while continuing the work already underway.

“Building an age-friendly city allows our residents to stay active, connected and supported as they age,” he said.

The milestone follows Council’s adoption of the Age-Friendly Manningham Framework 2026-2029, which outlines priorities to support older adults to age well in Manningham.

Developed with older residents, community stakeholders and researchers from La Trobe University, the framework guides how Manningham Council plans, designs and delivers programs, initiatives and spaces that support healthy ageing.

The new framework supported the successful application to be part of the Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities.

The Council said Network membership will provide opportunities to share and learn age-friendly best practice with communities around the world.
