$449m Geelong convention centre opens for business

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles and Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan have officially opened the Nyaal Banyul Geelong Convention and Event Centre.

The $449 million project is expected to turn Geelong into a world-class destination for global events and conferences.

“This world-leading venue is a massive win for regional development in Geelong, creating hundreds of ongoing jobs and celebrating the proud culture of the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners,” said Mr Marles.

“Nyaal Banyul is creating more opportunities for local businesses and attracting people to our regions,” said Victorian Minister for Regional Development, Michaela Settle.

“Regional Development Victoria has played a key role in delivering Nyaal Banyul, bringing together partners to create a world-class precinct that will support jobs, tourism and long-term growth for Geelong.”

The venue features:

  • a 1,000-seat theatre
  • exhibition spaces
  • meeting rooms
  • conference facilities
  • flexible event spaces
  • food and beverage offerings
  • Gheringhap Plaza.

The centre will start hosting events from next month, with 80 conferences and events already booked in for the venue.

The building was designed in collaboration with Wadawurrung Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation.

The project was made possible through a $416 million investment from the Victorian Government, alongside $30 million from the Australian Government and $3 million from the City of Greater Geelong Council.

“This world-class venue will attract major conferences, events and visitors from across Australia and beyond, strengthening our economy, supporting local jobs and creating opportunities for businesses across the region,” said Greater Geelong Deputy Mayor, Eddy Kontelj.

The precinct will host a free Community Open Day on Saturday 11 July.
