Yarra City turns first sod on new tennis courts

Yarra City Council has marked a major milestone in the Brunswick Street Oval redevelopment, welcoming Victorian Minister for Community Sport, Ros Spence, to Edinburgh Gardens recently to turn the first sod on construction of the precinct’s new tennis courts.

The event marks the start of construction on a project that has been in development for almost a decade and is now being made possible with an investment of $12.8 million from the Victorian Government via the Local Sports Infrastructure Fund.

The Council says the facility will be a game changer for local sport and community life, giving future generations more opportunities to play and take part in community sport.

The redevelopment includes:

  • two new tennis courts
  • a full upgrade of the six existing courts
  • new, accessible facilities and adjoining social and community room
  • an upgraded and accessible sports pavilion

“This redevelopment meets the needs of a fast-growing community and creates a welcoming home for local sport,” said Deputy Mayor, Sharon Harrison.

“The community tennis club has a three-year waiting list for members, and the Fitzroy Football and Junior Football Clubs, as well as the Edinburgh Cricket Club, are always in demand.

“It’s exciting to see this project take shape and I can’t wait to see the local community enjoying this new precinct for years to come.”
