Warrumbungle council works to stamp out illegal tobacco trade

Warrumbungle Shire Council has joined forces with NSW Police Force and NSW Health to address the proliferation of illegal tobacco premises within the North Western Region.

The Council says the proactive strategy in monitoring illegal activities last week led to a comprehensive business compliance inspection at a premise located within the Coonabarabran Business Centre.

“The inspection revealed that the entity was operating as a supplier of prohibited tobacco products,” Council said in a statement.

“NSW Health Officers seized over 230 cartons of prohibited tobacco, several kilo’s of loose-leaf tobacco known as ‘chop chop,’ and hundreds of vapes during the inspection.”

Additionally, a number of serious fire safety breaches were detected throughout the building by Warrumbungle Shire Council Officers, resulting in the issuance of an Emergency Closure Order against the operator of the business.

The Council says it is currently reviewing potential charges against both the operator and the building owners, “emphasising the commitment to enforcing Compliance and ensuring public safety.

“This joint agency operation underscores the importance of Whole of Government collaborative efforts in tackling illegal activities and safeguarding the community from harmful practices,” Council said.
