Two Queensland councils win heritage management plan funding

Two Queensland councils have won a total of more than $50,000 for local heritage projects in the latest funding round of the Queensland Government’s Community Sustainability Action grants – Heritage Conservation fund.

The Government has announced 19 heritage-listed landmarks will receive funding support in Round 9, with grants of up to $50,000 each.

Charters Towers Regional Council was awarded $38,000 for two heritage projects.

The Council will receive $19,000 for its conservation management plan for the Old City Hall in Charters Towers (formerly the Queensland National Bank) to help establish clear policies and practical strategies for conserve the building’s heritage significance.

A further $19,000 will be used to develop a conservation management plan for the former Australian Bank of Commerce in Charters Towers.

Bundaberg Council will receive $16,534 to prepare a conservation management plan for the Palace Hotel in Childers to determine the current condition of the building and its heritage fabric and provide guidance for Council to make informed decisions in relation to ongoing conservation and management of the site.

Minister for the Environment and Tourism, Andrew Powell said the upkeep of Queensland’s cultural assets was paramount to ensure they were kept in pristine condition to preserve the state’s history. 

“Queensland’s heritage‑listed places tell the story of our state; they are precious pieces of our past that give us a glimpse into the lives and times of those who came before us,” Minister Powell said. 

“The Crisafulli Government is conserving these heritage assets because it is important for Queenslanders and creates opportunities for locals and visitors seeking enriching experiences that connect them with our history. 

“I’d like to congratulate all 19 successful recipients across Queensland, and we can’t wait to see the work they deliver in preserving and celebrating our state’s heritage.”
