Toowoomba to collect feedback on new waste strategy

Toowoomba Regional Council is inviting local residents and business owners to provide feedback on how they manage their waste to help inform the Council’s new Waste Management Strategy.

Council Waste Services portfolio spokesperson, Councillor Melissa Taylor said the Council has a statutory obligation to review its Waste Management Strategy every five years, and the latest review is currently underway.

“The cost of waste going to landfill continues to escalate each year with the Queensland Government’s state landfill levy increasing, so too does the construction and operational costs for landfills,” said Cr Taylor.

“Council needs to better understand community needs to determine affordable and practical ways to reduce the amount of waste entering landfill. This will then minimise rates and utilities charges as well as service costs to the community,” she said.

The Council is conducting three separate surveys to gather community feedback. One of the surveys one will focus on recycling and sorting habits for residents with kerbside waste collection, while the other two will aim to better understand how residents and business owners generate and manage their waste, how they access Council waste management facilities and what policies would potentially motivate residents and business owners to change their waste management behaviours.

“Feedback from residents and business owners will help inform future planning for how we improve the services we offer and what type of facilities are needed in our community.”

“We strongly encourage residents to take a few minutes to complete these surveys, it will greatly help our community,” said Cr Taylor.

The surveys are open until Friday 28 March on TRC’s Have Your Say Page, or residents can contact council to receive a hard copy to complete and return. Survey participants will also be eligible to go in the draw to win a $500 eftpos card, with one winner per survey.
