Toowoomba Regional Council has acquired a key 3,160sqm CBD site as part of its long-term commitment to building a stronger, more resilient and economically successful city centre.
Council says the the former Betros Brothers Wholesale site on Annand Street is an important strategic landholding that strengthens its ability to shape the long-term future of the city centre.
“This is a future-focused purchase. The CBD Master Plan outlines a bold vision for a thriving city heart and securing strategic sites like this ensures Council can help guide the right kind of investment and development over the coming decades,” said Mayor, Geoff McDonald.
Funding for the purchase was fully offset through the sale of Council’s surplus Middle Ridge nursery site.
The former Betros Brothers site sits alongside existing Council-owned land, allowing for the creation of a larger, more connected precinct.
Council says the expanded footprint offers flexibility for future planning and the capacity to support projects that could deliver:
- Catalyst economic activity that attracts new business and supports local operators;
- Improved public realm, including better walkability and activated streets;
- A broader mix of land uses, strengthening after-hours activity and city centre living;
- Partnership opportunities with the private sector to deliver high quality development outcomes.
While Council has not confirmed any development proposal, it says the strategic value of the acquisition lies in securing future options, not making immediate changes.
The site will be considered as part of Council’s broader program to enhance liveability and promote economic growth in the CBD.
“This is about preparing Toowoomba for the next 20 to 30 years. Strategic decisions made now will underpin the prosperity, liveability and success of the CBD for generations,” said Mayor McDonald.
He said Council will continue to progress planning and engagement activities with the community and stakeholders to ensure Toowoomba has a thriving city centre.
Well-known local businessman, Kerry Betros said his family welcomed the site’s future role in shaping the CBD.
“Our family has been part of Toowoomba’s business community for generations. This site holds great significance for us and we’re pleased to know it will continue contributing to the city’s growth and vitality,” Mr Betros said.
“Seeing it become part of Council’s long-term vision for the CBD is something we’re proud of.”
