City of Melville Council has awarded a tender for the proposed transformation of LeisureFit Booragoon into a modern, contemporary, and accessible new swimming facility to Perth business, Cooper & Oxley Pty Ltd.
The $11.5m construction works involves a major refurbishment of the leisure pool, 50 metre pool, changing facilities and replacement of the air conditioning and ventilation systems.
“After 23 years of operation, a number of refurbishments are needed to replace and upgrade the air handling systems, swimming and changeroom facilities at LeisureFit Booragoon,” said City of Melville Chief Executive Officer, Marten Tieleman.
“We look forward to starting work on the eagerly awaited refurbishment to deliver a modern, contemporary and accessible swimming facility for our LeisureFit members and community to enjoy.”
The refurbishment will commence in two stages, with works to the leisure pool anticipated to start in late October 2023, and upgrades to the 50m pool expected to commence in late March 2024.
The entire refurbishment project is estimated to span approximately 60 weeks and be completed in November 2024.
“In line with our Disability Access and Inclusion Plan, we are making a number of improvements to promote inclusion and participation for people of all ages, gender, and physical abilities,” said Mr Tieleman.
“The upgrades will include ramp entrance to both the Leisure and 50m pools, acoustic treatments, improved indoor air quality, handrails, tactile pavers and accessible and gender-neutral changing facilities.
“We will also replace the current gas water heating system with electric heat pumps, allowing us to reduce carbon emissions and support our target of becoming a carbon neutral organisation by 2030,” he said.
