Sutherland Shire early education centre turns 50

Sutherland Shire Council’s Moore Street Early Education Centre has celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of service to local families and the community.

Mayor, Jack Boyd said the milestone reflected the strong community trust the centre has built since it opened in 1976.

“For 50 years, Moore Street has supported local families through high-quality care and education, and that enduring connection continues to be a key reason families choose the centre,” Mayor Boyd said.

Local parent Amy Walker, who attended Moore Street Early Education Centre as a child, now has her son enrolled at the centre.

“Having experienced Moore Street myself, it’s special to see my son enjoying the same supportive environment,” Ms Walker said.

“Council centres have a strong reputation, and my own history here made the decision easy.”

The Council says long-serving educators have played a central role in fostering the centre’s strong community connections, including Centre Director, Darren Watson and Educator, Kylee Smith, who have worked at Moore Street for 18 and 10 years respectively.

Mayor Boyd said their long-term commitment demonstrated the centre’s dedication to local families.

Mr Watson began his career at Moore Street as an assistant whilst undertaking early childhood studies, soon after finishing high school.

“Council has been very supportive of my TAFE and university studies, which has allowed me to grow professionally over the years,” he said.

“Our diverse team is passionate about supporting children to develop essential life skills and confidence.”

Ms Smith said her decade at the centre has reaffirmed her passion for early childhood education.

“The children bring so much joy each day,” she said.

“It’s a privilege to support their learning and curiosity.”
