City of Melville receives IPWEA sustainability honour

City of Melville Council has received a highly commended award at the IPWEA Excellence Awards in Environment and Sustainability for its Ogilvie Road Rehabilitation and Streetscape Upgrade Project.

The development is part of the broader Canning Bridge Activity Centre Plan, designed to evolve the precinct into a greener, more connected area.

Construction on the $4.2million Ogilvie Road project began in January last year, transforming the area between Helm Street and Canning Highway into a more welcoming, walkable and vibrant area for residents and businesses.

The work followed extensive community consultation from 2022 to ensure the design reflected local needs.

Upgrades encompassed new stormwater drainage with underground water retention tanks and road surface with permeable paving to improve infiltration, in line with Water Sensitive Urban Design Principles.

Recycled materials were incorporated into the road construction, reducing waste and supporting a more circular approach to asset delivery. Landscaped verges with wide footpaths, new trees, garden beds, seating and bespoke planters enhance the walkability and aesthetics of the whole street. Water‑wise plants and tree species were carefully selected to suit local conditions and minimise long‑term water use.

Mayor, Katy Mair said the project also focused on urban canopy outcomes, with the protection and retention of existing trees and the installation of 42 new street trees, enhancing both amenity and environmental resilience along the corridor.

“Sustainability and connected development are key focuses for our Council Plan for the Future 2024-2034, and the new Ogilvie Road delivers on our promise of sustainable, well-planned infrastructure and public places and spaces,” Mayor Mair said.

“The award is recognition of the hard work and collaboration of our staff and contractors, and it reinforces our commitment to delivering infrastructure that balances function, sustainability, and community benefit.

“It’s a great example of how we are embedding sustainability into our everyday infrastructure works.”

City of Melville Cr George Panayotou, Mayor Katy Mair, CEO Gail Bowman, Cr Nicole Robins and Cr Glynis Barber cut the ribbon at the official opening of the new look Ogilvie Rd.
