Sutherland council confirms lead design consultant for surf club redevelopment

Sutherland Shire Council has endorsed a recommended lead design consultant for its multi-million dollar North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club redevelopment following a robust tender process.

Mayor, Jack Boyd said the decision marks significant progress towards delivering a community asset which will serve club members and the wider community for generations to come.

“Appointing the right Lead Design Consultant will allow us to forge ahead with a project that is of significant importance to our community, club members and surf lifesaving volunteers, and the many local residents and visitors who will benefit from these facilities,” Mayor Boyd said.

Once the contract has been signed, an official announcement will be made in conjunction with the new Lead Design Consultant, the Mayor said.

“Last year, Council was presented with a comprehensive project update which detailed a litany of defects and serious structural issues throughout the works completed by the contractors previously appointed to this project. To now be at the stage where we have appointed a lead architect who will be responsible for guiding the project through every stage of the design process, is a massive step forward,” he said.

“The architect will be responsible for the concept development and planning approvals right through to construction support and post-construction services. It is a crucial role, leading the delivery of a quality, contemporary surf lifesaving facility that is fit for purpose, meets the needs of current and future generations, and re-establishes North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club as a vital community and recreational hub.”

Council says it undertook a rigorous and transparent procurement process to identify the most suitable consultant to lead this next phase of the project. The response was strong, with 26 high quality submissions received from leading firms across the country.

“The strong level of interest demonstrates the significance of this project and reflects the confidence that leading design professionals have in helping Council deliver a high-quality outcome for the community,” said Mayor Boyd.

A Tender Evaluation Panel comprising suitably qualified and experienced Council staff assessed all submissions, with an independent probity adviser providing oversight throughout the evaluation process.

Each submission was assessed against clearly defined criteria, to ensure the successful candidate has the professional experience and proven track record to deliver a project of this scale and importance.

“This project is not simply about replacing buildings. It is about restoring community confidence, supporting the invaluable work of surf lifesavers, and ensuring that this important public asset serves our community well into the future,” said the Mayor.
