An unassuming reservoir in the northern Tasmanian rural town of Cressy is set to have a striking new landmark, with the community invited to help shape a large-scale mural that celebrates the people, places and heritage that define it.
The reservoir mural project is a collaboration between TasWater and Northern Midlands Council and will see renowned Tasmanian mural artist James Cowan, known professionally as Kreamart, work alongside the community to create a vibrant artwork that reflects the region’s identity.
As part of the project, residents are being invited to attend a community session next week to meet the artist, share their stories and help shape the themes and design of the mural.
TasWater Community Programs Manager, Louis van Ek said the project is about turning essential infrastructure into a local attraction and talking point, something the community is proud of.
“The reservoir is an essential part of Cressy’s water network, supporting the daily lives of over 1,000 local residents and businesses,” said Mr van Ek.
“But this project is about much more than infrastructure. It’s an opportunity to showcase the people, places and stories that make Cressy special. Whether it’s the town’s deep agricultural roots, its connection to the river, or its status as Tasmania’s trout fishing capital, we want to create an artwork that can be celebrated by the community for generations to come.
“We’re excited to welcome ‘Kreamart’ back to work on another TasWater project after completing the celebrated Avoca Reservoir’s giant wedge-tail eagle mural back in 2023.”
Northern Midlands Council Mayor, Mary Knowles OAM said the project would create a lasting community asset while celebrating Cressy’s unique identity.
“Public art has a wonderful ability to bring communities together, tell local stories and create a sense of pride in place,” Mayor Knowles said.
“This mural is a fantastic opportunity for Cressy residents to help shape something that reflects their town’s character and history.
“We’re proud to partner with TasWater on this project and encourage community members to get involved, share their ideas and help create a landmark that visitors and locals alike can enjoy for years to come.”
Located in Tasmania’s Northern Midlands, Cressy is renowned for its fly fishing, rich farmland, the Macquarie River, Brumby’s Creek and the internationally recognised Brumby’s Creek Trout Hatchery.
Artist, James Cowan said community involvement is at the heart of the creative process.
“The best murals tell the stories of the people who live there. I’m looking forward to hearing what makes Cressy unique and working with the community to create a design that captures its character and sense of place,” said Mr Cowan.
Following community consultation, two concept designs will be developed and put to a public vote before the final artwork is selected.
The project forms part of TasWater’s award-winning Community Art Program, which transforms infrastructure into public artworks that celebrate local identity, foster community pride and strengthen connections between TasWater and the communities it serves.
