Sunbury station car park approved

Hume City Council has granted planning approval for a new multi-deck car park at Sunbury station which it says will make it easier and more accessible for locals to catch the train.

The new car park will be delivered by Hume City Council and will be jointly funded with support from the Victorian Government’s Car Parks for Commuters Program, the Victorian Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution, the Australian Government’s Urban Congestion Fund and Hume City Council.

A request for tender has been issued, seeking bids from shortlisted construction contractors before works begin in 2023, Council said on Friday.

“The new multideck car park will deliver an additional 300 parking spaces for commuters. The expansion will build on the car parks currently available for commuters across the Sunbury Station precinct, with demand at the station increasing across Sunbury’s growing community,” Council said in a statement.

It said the project, to be built in central Sunbury on the corner of Station Street and Evans Street, will also deliver more than 200 spaces for shoppers and traders across four levels.

“We are proud to be delivering this project for our community. The car park will reduce congestion on our local roads and ensure the future needs of both commuters and shoppers are met,” said Mayor of Hume City, Carly Moore.

“There is significant demand for all-day parking near the Station and these extra spaces will allow more people to catch the train and get where they need to go.”

The new car parking area will feature accessible parking for people with disability, enhanced lighting and improved signage within the precinct.

The car park will not only make it easier for commuters catching the train – it will also alleviate pressure on neighbouring streets which are often used for parking by commuters, shoppers and shop tenants, Council said.

“We are thrilled that after calls for additional parking from locals we are getting on with delivering what is needed and meeting the demands of the local community,” said Member for Sunbury, Josh Bull.

“Whether you walk, ride or drive to Sunbury Station – these upgrades will make it easier for everyone catching the train.”
