Royal test for Sydney bike lanes

Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore, and City of Sydney Council employees had a very special visitor yesterday, as Crown Princess Mary of Denmark visited the city as part of her first Australian tour in a decade.

The Princess donned a bike helmet and rode through Hyde Park and down to Customs House where she met the Lord Mayor. The pair then boarded the light rail for a trip to Sydney Town Hall.

“No one looks good in a bike helmet, but safety first,” Princess Mary said as she adjusted her helmet ahead of the ride.

She described the city’s transformation since her last visit 10 years ago as “amazing”.

“It’s wonderful to be here, it’s wonderful to experience the new bike lanes,” the Princess said.

Outside Sydney Town Hall, Lord Mayor Moore presented Princess Mary with a gift – a book titled ‘Creating a Liveable City’, which documents projects completed by the Council.

“Sydney has a special relationship with Denmark, from Princess Mary herself, to urbanist Jan Gehl’s work on our city’s long-term strategy, to more recent partnerships such as 3XN’s incredible new Quay Quarter Tower,” the Lord Mayor said.

“It was wonderful to host Princess Mary and the Danish delegation to celebrate some of the infrastructure and changes in Sydney they have helped inspire.”
