A dedicated Greater Dandenong School Crossing Supervisor, who has spent more than 20 years helping local children get to and from school safely, has been recognised with a prestigious award.
Everard Schoorman was named School Crossing Supervisor of the Year for the region, after being nominated for his dedication, professionalism and commitment to student safety.
Mr Schoorman was one of 28 nominees for the regional award.
Greater Dandenong Mayor, Sophie Tan, congratulated Mr Schoorman, saying he had “become a familiar and trusted face for many local families over the past two decades.”
“Every school day, Everard helps children cross the road safely while creating a welcoming and friendly environment for students, parents and carers,” said the Mayor.
“This award recognises the important role School Crossing Supervisors play in our community and the difference people like Everard make every day.”

Mr Schoorman has worked as a School Crossing Supervisor since 2005 and has lived in Keysborough since the late 1980s. Over the years, he has built strong relationships with local families and watched generations of children grow up.
“Many families know me by name, and I enjoy having a quick chat with people as they pass by. I’ve had the privilege of watching children grow up and seeing former students return years later as young adults,” he said.
“What I enjoy most about the role is knowing I’m helping keep local families safe every day.”
Mr Schoorman said the role had given him a strong sense of purpose and connection to the community while allowing him to care for his wife after she suffered a stroke.
Despite working through rain, wind and extreme heat, he said the rewards of the role far outweighed the challenges.
“I love being part of the community and giving back to the place I’ve called home for many years,” he said.
