Randwick Council issues beach booze warning

Randwick City Council is warning visiting backpackers to “keep the booze off the beaches” this Christmas.

A complete alcohol ban is in effect from today across all beaches and beachside parks in the Randwick City area – Clovelly, Gordons Bay, Coogee, Lurline Bay, Maroubra, Malabar, Little Bay, La Perouse and Yarra Bay.

NSW Police are enforcing the ban with the support of Council to keep the City’s beaches safe, welcoming and inclusive during the busy Christmas and New Year period.

Mayor, Dylan Parker said Randwick City welcomed visitors from across Sydney, interstate and overseas, but asked them to respect local rules.

“Our beaches and beachside parks are for everyone. They should feel safe, relaxed and welcoming, day and night,” he said.

“We love that people from all over the world come to enjoy our beaches. You are absolutely welcome here.

“But leave the alcohol at home. If you want a drink, head to one of our excellent local pubs, bars or restaurants instead.

“This is about respect – for families, for other beachgoers, and for the community that looks after these incredible places.”

He said Council rangers are working closely with NSW Police who will patrol beaches and beachside reserves over the Christmas and New Year period. Fines will apply for drinking alcohol in prohibited public places.

The ban is in place until Monday 5 January 2026.

Alcohol is already banned year-round at all beaches and at some parks, including Goldstein Reserve at Coogee.
