Moonee Valley City Council has welcomed today’s Federal Government announcement of more funding for the long-awaited Melbourne Airport Rail project.
Mayor, Ava Adams said Airport Rail would not only provide a reliable public transport link to the airport for Victorian commuters but also deliver for Moonee Valley residents a new station local to both Airport West and Keilor East – linking more residents with the Victorian rail network for the first time.
But despite being announced in 2018, the project has consistently faced delays, the Mayor says.
An announcement today by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, pledging $2 billion for a new rail hub in Sunshine, moves the project another step towards reality, she said.
“Now is the time for the State and Federal Governments to finally deliver on their long-overdue promise of Melbourne Airport Rail,” the Mayor says.
“A reliable public transport connection between the Airport and Melbourne’s north and west suburbs is a necessity for our growing city and council area.“To delay any longer would mean more traffic congestion and lost opportunities for economic growth.
“Let’s get it done.”
The Federal funding commitment follows the recent launch of Brimbank City Council’s Rail Before Runway campaign, calling for delivery of the airport rail before a third runway opens at Tullamarine in 2031.
Mayor Adams backed the Brimbank campaign and urged State and Federal governments to move ahead on construction quickly.
