Monitors appointed to City of Kingston Council

Two municipal monitors will be appointed to City of Kingston Council for the remainder of 2025, the Victorian Government has announced.

Minister for Local Government, Nick Staikos today confirmed John Tanner AM will serve as one of the municipal monitors, with a second monitor to be appointed at a later date.

Mr Tanner has previously served as chairman of the panel of Administrators appointed to the Moira Shire Council and currently acts as a monitor at Hobsons Bay City Council.

The monitors will be in place from 25 August until 31 December and will advise, assist, and support the council to improve its governance processes and practices.

“Victorians expect their councils to maintain a high standard of processes and practices, and these monitors will help the council best serve the Kingston community,” said Minister Staikos.

Following today’s announcement, Kingston Mayor, Georgina Oxley and CEO, Peter Bean expressed their commitment to working with the monitors.

“Our councillors, executive team and staff are keen to assist however we can to support them in the role,” Mr Bean said.

“Council remains committed to delivering excellent services to our community, built on a foundation of good governance and strong customer service.”

“We look forward to better understanding the Victorian Government’s concerns and working closely with the monitors to share our strong processes, governance oversight and transparent decision-making,” Mayor Oxley said.

“Our focus remains on serving the people of Kingston and I will continue to lead with independence and integrity, with decision-making that is guided by what is best for our community.”
