$6.5m Glenorchy pool refurbishment reaches halfway mark

Glenorchy City Council’s $6.5 million refurbishment of Glenorchy Pool has reached the halfway mark, with the facility well on track to be opened ahead of next summer.

Mayor, Sue Hickey today said the works will be completed by the end of the financial year, thanks to a $5 million State Government grant and $1.5 million from the Council.

“This project has literally breathed new life into our community’s pool,” the Mayor said.

“Even though work is ongoing, it’s hard to imagine it’s even the same facility – the Council is transforming the pool into a place where people will no doubt be queuing up to use when summer arrives.”

Mayor Hickey said extensive refurbishment has already been completed in the change rooms, which now comply with modern standards for access and privacy.

“With new plastering, floor drainage and modern flooring, along with partitioned showers, the changerooms have been transformed.”

“In terms of the pool itself, the new ramp access has been completed awaiting tiling and handrails. The pool floor is being prepared for painting, with sealing repairs to the pool shell also scheduled.

“Critically, a new main switchboard has been installed in the plant room – replacing the old switchboard which was understood to have already been second-hand when it was installed at the pool in the 1960s.”

Mayor Hickey said repairs to the grandstand’s stairs are occurring with new handrails due to be installed shortly. Solar heating for the pool is being prepared, and service tunnel works are also happening.

“We’re halfway there, on time and on budget – and with each day we get a little closer to getting the pool re-opened and re-enjoyed by the community,” she said.

“We haven’t forgotten our long-term plan to redevelop the facility into a regional aquatic centre, but in the short term, Glenorchy residents will again have access to an outdoor community pool over the warmer months, enjoying all the benefits of an active, healthy
and connected lifestyle that such a facility supports.”
