Millewa and Carwarp residents are being invited to express their interest in having local native plants established on their properties free-of-charge.
Mildura Rural City Councillor for Environment and Sustainability, Jason Modica said the invitation was part of the Victorian Government’s Drought Recovery Grant Program.
“The drought may have ended several years ago and is no longer front-of-mind for many of us, however the impacts are still very evident in some areas within our municipality,” Cr Modica said.
“Establishing native plants is a great way to combat the impacts of drought, stabilising the soil, providing a habitat for animals, protecting against wind erosion and improving soil structure.
“This will not only repair the damage done by the previous drought but better prepare for any future drought events.”
Successful applicants will not need to plant trees themselves. As part of the program a contractor will establish trees on residents’ properties, however ongoing maintenance and watering of trees will remain the responsibility of landowners.
