Mediation training scholarships on offer

The Queensland Government is encouraging young people to apply for one of four scholarships on offer for accredited mediation training valued at more than $3,300.

Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Shannon Fentiman said the seventh annual Jack Cranstoun Scholarship was a reminder of the value of the Queensland Government’s dispute resolution services.

“Mediation services are invaluable to our Queensland communities, providing much needed assistance to members of the public to resolve disputes and reach mutually agreed solutions without going to court,” Minister Fentiman said.

“This scholarship pays tribute to a much-loved and talented mediator with the Department of Justice and Attorney-General (DJAG) who sadly lost his life in 2014.

“It gives young Queenslanders equipped with the same engaging attributes the opportunity to hone their skills and become nationally-accredited mediators.

“Mediation training is beneficial for anyone who would like to develop their communication and negotiation skills.

“I’m proud to announce the launch of this year’s scholarship, and I encourage all young Queenslanders looking to upskill and make a difference in our communities to submit an application.”

Applications for the 2021 Jack Cranstoun Scholarship are now open.

The scholarship is awarded to four recipients across the following categories:

  • regional Queensland (1 scholarship)
  • open category (2 scholarships)
  • DJAG staff (1 scholarship).

Scholarship recipients are trained in two interactive courses:

Minister Fentiman said each successful recipient would receive intensive mediation training valued at $3,353.

“Many young adults in the workforce would benefit from having dispute resolution skills and being able to facilitate open discussion, whether with community groups, public service, clients or business professionals,” she said.

Queensland university students may especially want to consider this training, which could give them the career boost they need.”

To date, 16 young Queenslanders have been awarded mediation training as part of the Jack Cranstoun scholarship program.
