Maitland has won the right to host the 2026 Local Government NSW (LGNSW) Destination and Visitor Economy Conference, which is expected to attract hundreds of participants from across NSW.
The conference brings together local government tourism experts and stakeholders to hear from leading researchers, practitioners and industry experts who will explore the latest trends in the tourism sector.
LGNSW President, Broken Hill City Councillor, Darriea Turley AM said tourism continued to be one of the most important industries for councils all over NSW.
“I want to congratulate Maitland City Council on winning the right to host the event in 2026,” she said.
“That conference will be a critical forum as we continue to bounce back from the bushfires and floods of recent years.
“Small businesses and tourism operators, as well as councils, took a financial hit with the natural disasters and it’s critical that they have access to all the latest information to help them thrive once again.
“And conferences like ours give them easily accessible experts to help put them on the right track to success.”
She said Hunter Valley residents knew only too well the critical importance of the visitor economy.
Maitland City Council Mayor, Philip Penfold said he was thrilled the Council would host the 2026 conference.
“Maitland is an ideal location for the conference, with great venues and diverse visitor experiences, and as a first time host, this is an opportunity for us to show off our city,” he said.
“While delegates may have visited neighbouring regions like Port Stephens and Newcastle before, we know Maitland will offer a unique experience for them.
“Maitland City Council looks forward to welcoming the 2026 LGNSW Destination and Visitor Economy Conference participants to the region.”
