Murray River councils have described the announcement of joint Federal and Victorian funding of the Kerang Link energy project as a “massive win” for northern Victoria.
Murray River Group of Councils chair, Libro Mustica, called the decision to back the electricity transmission line as a “a once in a generation opportunity for our region”.
The project, also known as VNI-West, will see a new 500KV transmission network interconnector constructed between Victoria and NSW via Kerang to be completed by 2028.
It is a key first stage to unlock the enormous renewable energy powerhouse that is northern Victoria, said Cr Mustica.
“We have the solar resource, suitable available land and a track record in thevregion with projects already delivered in Gannawarra, Swan Hill and Mildura.
“That is why we have projects already with planning permits, ready to go that could generate over 4GW of electricity.
“The only thing holding them back is the transmission network is constrained. Once
Kerang Link is built and the Renewable Energy Zones are developed, we will see these solar farms constructed and delivering renewable electricity to the grid.”
Kerang Link has been a top priority for the Murray River Group for a number of years now and was a key ask at the last Federal Election, Cr Mustica said.
“It is gratifying to see the results of our collective advocacy today,” he said.
“It’s providing the certainty that investors and communities need that these solar projects in our area will get built. The MRGC region is primed to become a clean energy powerhouse and its contribution will be critical in meeting renewable energy targets.”
He said the regional investment was needed now more than ever.
“Kerang is currently cut off by its second 1-in-100 year flood in 11 years. The investment needed to repair the damage will be substantial and the Group says it is looking forward to working with the State and Federal Governments in the coming months to build back better.
“Over the longer term, this announcement and the investment it will unlock will provide a massive boost to the regional economy.
“We look forward to working with AEMO, and the Federal and Victorian Governments on the detail and on meaningful engagement with our communities so we can get this vital infrastructure built,” said Cr Mustica.
