Iconic Goulburn tower to close ahead of centenary

Goulburn’s iconic Rocky Hill War Memorial Tower will be temporarily closed to the public as it undergoes vital conservation works ahead of its 100th anniversary later this year.

Goulburn Mulwaree Council says the specialist works will focus on concrete remediation and addressing water ingress issues, ensuring the long-term preservation of the important historical landmark, while enhancing its structural integrity for generations to come.

“The Memorial and access to the forecourt will also be closed to the public from early February for several months, including ANZAC Day,” Council said in a statement.

“The community is encouraged to continue supporting the official ANZAC Day services at Belmore Park, organised by the Goulburn RSL Sub-Branch, to pay tribute to those who served.”

The conservation project has been made possible through $132,250 in funding from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Saluting Their Service Program, with additional contributions from the Council to complete the works.

The Rocky Hill War Memorial stands as a lasting tribute to those who served, and these upgrades reflect the community’s commitment to honouring its history while safeguarding its future, the Council said.

“While the tower is closed, the Rocky Hill War Memorial Museum will remain open during its normal operating hours, allowing visitors to continue exploring the region’s rich wartime history and stories.”
