The 2026 LGNSW Destination and Visitor Economy Conference wrapped up in Maitland on Friday, with organisers heralding the event a resounding success.
The conference brings together councils and tourism leaders to collaborate, share insights and unlock new opportunities for the visitor economy.
“Tourism helps build stronger, more resilient communities. This conference has shown the value of local leadership in turning ambition into action and creating lasting opportunities for communities across the state,” said LGNSW President, Darcy Byrne.
President Byrne thanked Maitland City Council and Mayor, Philip Penfold, for the warm hospitality offered to conference participants.
“I also thank the Member for Maitland, NSW Minister for Roads and Regional Transport, the Hon Jenny Aitchison MP, for her attendance and support for our conference.”
Council representatives from across the state gathered to explore the critical role of tourism in driving economic growth, supporting local jobs, and strengthening community resilience.
Delegates engaged in a dynamic mix of panel discussions, workshops and site visits, exploring everything from emerging trends and practical tools in the visitor economy to global marketing strategies and key policy issues shaping the sector.
The program also delved into how council-owned assets can be activated to enhance visitor experiences, alongside the opportunities presented by new and upgraded airport infrastructure to drive future tourism growth.

The conference included the announcement of the NSW Top Tourism Town Awards hosted by the NSW Tourism Association and presented by Chair of the Association, Stuart Ayres.
Planning is already under way for the 2027 LGNSW Destination and Visitor Economy Conference, to be hosted by the City of Coffs Harbour on the Coffs Coast.
