Griffith’s striking new mural on the Scenic Hill water reservoir now has a name thanks to the creative efforts of local school students.
Griffith City Council recently invited local students to take part in a naming competition for the reservoir, asking them to come up with a title that captured the spirit and story of the mural. Many imaginative entries were received, making the judging process a difficult task before they settled on ‘Taste of Griffith’ as the winning entry.
Mayor, Doug Curran and mural artist, HEESCO, reviewed all the entries and were impressed by the thought and originality on display.
The winning name was submitted by two students, Kandice Khouri from Griffith North Public School and Chelsea Quarisa from Griffith East Public School (both pictured).
Mayor Curran said it was excellent to see young people getting involved.
“It was fantastic to see so many students taking part. The ideas were creative, clever and really showed how much pride our young people have in our community,” he said.
“There were so many great entries, it wasn’t easy to choose a winner. But Taste of Griffith really stood out as it captures the flavour of who we are as a city and what the mural represents.”
The mural itself is a major feature on the 9ML Water Tank overlooking Scenic Hill and celebrates Griffith’s rich culture, diversity, agriculture and First Nations heritage.
Completed by HEESCO in 2024, the reservoir has become a much-loved addition to the local landscape, said Mayor Curran.
