Toowoomba Regional Council isĀ inviting local community members to have their say on plans for a revitalised art museum to update or replace the existing Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery.
Opened in 1937, the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery is the oldest public art gallery in regional Queensland.
Council Library and Cultural Services portfolio spokesperson, Councillor Melissa Taylor said community input would play a crucial role in developing a business case for the project, which was being prepared in partnership with Simon McArthur and Associates (SMA Tourism).
āAs part of this exciting project, Council is hosting community workshops in Toowoomba and Pittsworth, along with an online session, to gather ideas, insights and inspiration,ā Cr Taylor said.
āYour feedback will help shape the future direction of the Regionās premier art and cultural destination.
āMost importantly, we want to hear from as many people as possible ā no matter where you are. Whether you attend a workshop, join the online session, or complete the survey ā every idea counts.
āWeāre asking the community to think boldly and share what a vibrant, inclusive and inspiring art museum might look like for our Region.ā
Feedback will be gathered across five key themes:
- The essence of an art gallery,
- Connecting people and art,
- Exhibitions and experiences,
- Experiencing the collections, and
- Art museum and surrounds.
The Community Workshop Dates are:
- Toowoomba: Tuesday, April 29, 2025, 5.30pm ā 7.30pm at the Community Venues, Level 3, Toowoomba City Library;
- Pittsworth: Wednesday, April 30, 2025, 10am ā noon at the Pittsworth Function Centre, 42 Hume Street, Pittsworth.
And online session will also be held on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, 5.30pm ā 7.30pm. To register for any session, contact Council onĀ 131 872Ā or emailĀ yoursay@tr.qld.gov.au
āThese themes help participants consider what draws them to galleries and the kinds of experiences they remember and value,ā Cr Taylor said.
The project follows Councilās October 2023 resolution to explore options for updating or replacing the current gallery. In October 2024, SMA Tourism was awarded the contract to prepare the business case.
āNow is the time to imagine how it can evolve to inspire generations to come,” Cr Taylor said.
