Gold Coast street name program honours veterans

City of Gold Coast Council’s Streets of Remembrance Program this year saw the rebadging of 11 street signs with either the Australian Defence Force “Rising Sun’ (seventh pattern) or a poppy emblem in honour of local WWI and WWII service personnel in time for Anzac Day.

“Our Streets of Remembrance Program is in its second year and identifies street names that have an affiliation with these personnel,” said Mayor, Tom Tate (pictured with a local resident).

“This important program has been created to build our community spirit and to remember those from the Gold Coast who bravely fought for our country.”

Streets rebadged this year:

  • 1. Birtwistle Street, Southport
  • 2. Cotlew Street, Ashmore
  • 3. Shaw Street, Southport
  • 4. Slayter Street, Southport
  • 5. Geoff Wolter Drive, Molendinar
  • 6. McCleary Street, Bundall
  • 7. Panitz Street, Bundall
  • 8. Foxwell Road, Coomera
  • 9. Campbell Street, Bundall
  • 10. Gilmour Lane, Southport
  • 11. Howard Street, Runaway Bay

Last ANZAC Day, the City rebadged 23 local streets to honour personnel that had a strong connection to the Gold Coast when they served in World War I, and this year it was extended to include World War II.

Street names were researched and validated by heritage professionals drawing on service records and other historical sources.
