Kiama Municipal Council says it is taking steps to address a fire compliance issue identified in Stage 5 of its Blue Haven Terralong retirement village.
The issue came to light during routine refurbishment of three units, where contractors identified deficiencies in the internal cavity walls. This prompted a broader review and the engagement of an independent fire safety engineer, the Council confirmed in a statement.
Mayor Cameron McDonald said the facility remains safe to occupy, and there is no immediate risk to residents or staff, but the construction issue results in a fire safety non-compliance.
He said Council was committed to acting transparently and responsibly.
“This is not an emergency or evacuation situation. Blue Haven Terralong is safe, and we’re taking the appropriate steps to ensure it stays that way,” Mayor McDonald said.
“We’re working closely with independent fire safety consultants and the relevant authorities to resolve the matter and bring Stage 5 into full compliance.”
The issue only relates to Stage 5 of the village. Stages 1 to 4 are not affected.
Council says it will formally respond to the matter via a fire safety order, with remediation works to be planned and implemented in line with expert recommendations.
“We understand any mention of fire safety may raise questions, which is why we are being open and upfront with residents and the community,” Mayor McDonald said.
“The wellbeing of residents and staff remains our top priority.”
Blue Haven Terralong is owned and operated by Kiama Council and has provided independent retirement living to the Kiama community for many decades.
Council says the matter is unrelated to the recent sale of Blue Haven Bonaira, which is a separate facility.
It has directly informed residents and staff, and says it will continue to provide updates as work progresses.
