False start for George Bass Drive

The $4.65 million upgrade of George Bass Drive at Lilli Pilli will not open today as planned, Eurobodalla Shire Council has announced.

Moisture has been detected under the surface of the road pavement seal in a small section of the new road, meaning the surface may become unsafe, Council said in a statement.

Assessments are now underway and more testing will take place before determining any treatments to be implemented in the morning, it said.

The road will stay closed until at least 4pm on Friday 24 December.

“It is hoped the road will open for Christmas once testing and any holding treatments are complete tomorrow,” Council said.

“This is a disappointing outcome, but not uncommon when roads are built during prolonged wet weather.”

The $4.65 million project has been funded by the Federal government to remove dangerous bends at Grandfathers Gully, near Lilli Pilli.
