Disaster recovery assistance has been activated for the Shire of Jerramungup after significant rainfall and flash flooding impacted the region in July.
On 28 July, an intensifying low-pressure system produced heavy rainfall as it crossed the south coast near Bremer Bay, causing flooding for two days. The floodwaters caused widespread disruption, including the closure of sealed and unsealed roads, damage to floodways, and restricted access to critical services.
To facilitate the recovery process, financial assistance has been made available under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA) to help the shire repair essential public assets damaged by the flooding.
Federal Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain said the assistance measures would provide support for communities in the shire to undertake crucial works to recover.
“Communities in regional and remote areas are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of natural hazards, so our support to alleviate as much as the financial cost to restore essential public assets will go a long way to setting them up for long-term recovery,” said Ms McBain.
Western Australian Emergency Services Minister, Paul Papalia said the activation of the joint DRFA will provide the shire with financial support to help undertake eligible recovery works and restore essential infrastructure.
“The State Government remains committed to working with the Australian Government and local government to support communities impacted by disasters through their recovery,” he said.
