Council extends sympathy to family of tasered great grandmother

Snowy Monaro Regional Council has this morning issued a statement following the death of 95-year-old great grandmother, Clare Nowland, who died in hospital overnight after being tasered by police in a Council-run nursing home a week ago.

“Council extends our deepest sympathies to family and friends of Clare Nowland following her death yesterday at the age of 95,” the Council said in a statement.

“Mrs Nowland was a loved and respected member of the Yallambee Lodge family. Clare lived with us for five years and in that time her fellow residents and staff enjoyed her company and wonderful personality.

“Clare was a selfless and committed member of the Snowy Monaro community and her loss will be felt across the region, just as her long life touched so many of us.

“Our thoughts at this time are with the Nowland family and all who knew Clare,” Council said.

Thirty-three year old NSW Police Senior Constable Kristian White, an officer with 12 years experience, is facing three charges including recklessly causing grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and common assault.

Snr Const White allegedly tasered Mrs Nowland (pictured) at Yallambee Lodge on 17 May as she approached the officer on her walking frame and holding a kitchen knife.

The charges against the officer are expected to be upgraded when he appears in court on 5 July.
