Geraldton has welcomed the return of Beresford Foreshore’s most well-known piece of public art.
‘Horizon‘, one of Geraldton’s much-loved public art pieces was re-installed yesterday after it suffered a structural failure last year.
Arriving in Geraldton after being manufactured in Thailand, City of Greater Geraldton Mayor, Shane Van Styn said it was the ultimate early Christmas present for Geraldton.
“It was a devastating blow when the much-loved and highly photographed piece had to be removed last year due to unforeseen damage,” he said.
“But given how much our locals, and visitors, love the piece – we got to work with artist Lucy Humphrey to devise a plan of attack to get it back on our Foreshore!
“We are overjoyed to welcome the piece back home to Beresford Foreshore and look forward to seeing its popularity reignite.”
Horizon by award-winning artist Lucy Humphrey was installed on Beresford Foreshore in 2019 after securing national awards as part of Sculptures by the Sea.
It quickly became a busy attraction and welcomed a constant stream of visitors.
After the 1.5m sphere suffered a structural failure in November 2021, Council was quick to resolve the matter and voted for a replacement sculpture to be arranged.
With warm weather and vandalism thought to be contributing factors to the damage, the installation of CCTV was also approved and installed as part of the 2021/22 mid-year budget review.
