Camden’s creative past goes on display

Camden Council has unveiled the second instalment of its Camden Art Collections, showcasing a suite of artworks acquired between 1988 and 2003.

The new exhibition, on display at Alan Baker Art Gallery at Macaria, 37 John Street, Camden, opened on Saturday and will run until 31 May 2026. It features paintings, textile, photo media and works on paper and highlights pieces acquired through the annual Camden Art Prize, alongside purchased and gifted works.

Among the highlights are gifted artworks from Shonan and Kashiwa City, Japan, presented through the Camden International Friendship Association (CIFA). This cultural exchange started in 1983 and was formally recognised in 1997 with the signing of the International Friendship Agreement.

A standout feature of the Gallery’s entry is the Cowpastures Memorial Quilt, created by the Camden Quilters Guild and unveiled by His Excellency, the Governor of NSW, Rear Admiral Peter Sinclair, in 1995. This intricate work remains a beloved tribute to local heritage and community pride.

Mayor, Therese Fedeli, said the exhibition was a celebration of creativity, culture and community.

“This collection tells the story of Camden through art – our people, places and history,” she said.

“Each piece reflects a moment in time and a connection to our community that continues to grow stronger with every year. I encourage all our residents to come along and see what this exhibition has to offer. With free entry, it’s the perfect day out.”

The exhibition features work by renowned artists including Elisabeth Cummings, Suzanne Archer, Alan D. Baker, Pro Hart, Rizwana Ahmad, Jane Bennett, David Fairbairn, David Manks and many others.
