Bayside Council is investigating the feasibility of restoring the original facade of the Mascot Town Hall, engaging a specialist consultant to undertake an invasive heritage assessment of the building.
Anecdotal accounts and early photographic records suggest that the building’s original facade (pictured) featured architectural elements of significant heritage value.
Over time, these features have been altered, concealed, or replaced. Restoring or partially revealing the original facade will enhance local heritage appreciation, improve visual amenity, and strengthen community identity, Council said in a statement.
This will involve removing sections of wall and ceiling so that access can be gained to determine what remains behind the external and internal skins that were added in the 1970s.
The consultant’s findings will be documented, and recommendations for the future of the building formulated based on the findings of this investigation. A report will be provided for Council’s consideration, once the consultant’s assessment has been finalised.
“This historic building has a great significance to the people of Mascot,” said Mayor, Edward McDougall.
“It will be wonderful if we can find a way to showcase the original facade of this building for our community.”
An on-site inception meeting has been conducted, and the physical work will be undertaken in the coming weeks.
