Inner West Council makes Gay Mardi Gras debut

Inner West Council has made its Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade debut, taking part in Saturday’s event for the first time as part of a new partnership that aims to celebrate local pride, inclusion and community.

Under the banner ‘Lots of love from the Inner West’, Mayor Darcy Byrne said Council’s inaugural float celebrated the organisation’s ongoing commitment to equality, diversity and the LGBTQIA+ community.

“The Inner West has long been a place where diversity is celebrated and equality is fought for. This year, we are proud to stand shoulder to shoulder with our community in one of the most powerful public displays of solidarity,” said Mayor Byrne.

The float featured some of Council’s key programs and achievements to support the LGBTQIA+ community including the Pride Centre and Pride Square in Newtown, Trans and Gender Diverse Swim Nights, Drag Story Time and the newly launched Pride History Walk.

“This partnership Is just the start. We’re committed to working with Mardi Gras on a longer-term relationship, as we look towards the festival’s 50-year anniversary in 2028,” the Mayor said.

Up to 80 staff, Councillors and community members from some of Council’s Local Democracy Groups, took part in the inaugural float, wearing shirts with the Council logo and Council high-vis workwear.
