The Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale suburb of Byford has retained its status as the ‘baby capital’ of Western Australia, according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data release.
The suburb recorded the highest number of newborns of any suburb in the State for the 2024/25 financial year.
With 403 babies born, the Shire welcomed more than one new baby every day in what it says is a reflection of the young families who continue to choose Byford as home.
“Byford’s growth shows that families see something special here,” said Shire President, Rob Coales.
“Reaching more than 40,000 residents is a significant milestone for our Shire, but it’s the people behind the numbers who make this community what it is.
“SJ is a caring, welcoming place where neighbours look out for one another, and where our close-knit spirit is still shaped by our rural roots.
“Families choose SJ because it feels like home and that’s something we can all be proud of. We’ll continue advocating and planning for a future that supports this growth while maintaining the liveable, welcoming community that defines our Shire.”
The Shire has also passed another major milestone, reaching a population of more than 40,000 residents in mid-2024.
Serpentine Jarrahdale remains one of the fastest-growing local governments in Western Australia. Its population grew by 4.5% in 2024/25, second only to the neighbouring City of Kwinana at 4.6%.
With its population projected to reach 50,000 residents by 2030/31, the Shire continues to plan ahead for rapid growth.
The organisation’s first Children and Families Plan will be presented to Council later this year. The plan is being developed in consultation with local families, including children aged up to 11 years old, and will include actions that will guide the Shire’s focus over the next four years.
