Another win for Whyalla jetty

Whyalla’s iconic jetty has collected another award to add to the trophy cabinet – this time winning a national ‘peoples’ choice’ award for Contributing to Regional Growth.

The National Awards for Local Government’s Contributing to Regional Growth Award recognises local government projects which:

  • Improve the liveability of a region and take advantage of region-specific opportunities;
  • Empower vibrant and connected regional communities that promote diversity and inclusion; and
  • Strengthen investment and development opportunities, share resources, build local capability, and create jobs.

City of Whyalla Council Mayor, Clare McLaughlin said she was thrilled to receive the phone call advising that council had won the award thanks to overwhelming public support.

“We are so proud of our Jetty, and we want to thank the Whyalla community and our supporters far and wide who took the time to vote for our submission. It was because of you that we won this award, ensuring our jetty has again been recognised on a national stage for the impact that it has had on our community,” Mayor McLaughlin said.

Assistant Minister for Local Government, Kevin Hogan congratulated the winners, and all nominating local councils, for their projects and the positive outcomes achieved in their communities.

“These awards have been running for 35 years now, with councils never ceasing to go above and beyond and amaze the nation with new incredible achievements every year, and 2021 is no different,” Assistant Minister Hogan said.

“I congratulate all the category winners in this year’s awards for their outstanding achievements, I can’t wait to see their projects showcased to even more people across the nation.

“I also want to thank and congratulate all nominated councils for their outstanding work and determination, and to the communities who hopped online to vote,” he said.

This award adds to the collection already won by the iconic Jetty. In October, the jetty won the Social and Community Infrastructure category at the Urban Development Institute of Australia, South Australia (UDIA SA) Awards for Excellence. In September 2020, the jetty won the IPWEA SA’s prestigious Best Public Works Project over $5.0m and in May 2021, the jetty received LG Professional Award for Excellence in Infrastructure Delivery.  Closer to home, the jetty was also awarded a certificate of recognition from Whyalla Business and Tourism.
